A Ukrainian court has sentenced a Russian tank commander to life in prison for shooting dead an unarmed 62-year-old man as he rode his bicycle down a village road, in Ukraine’s first trial for war crimes committed during the Russian invasion.
Vadim Shishimarin had already pleaded guilty at a hearing last week to killing Oleksandr Shelipov in Chupakhivka on 28 February, though on Friday his lawyer asked judges in the courtroom in Kyiv to acquit him on the grounds that he was executing an order.
